Sammilani Mahvidyalaya Library caters to the needs of students and teachers of the college six days a week except Sunday. It has already crossed a milestone of a collection of 17000 books in various subjects. The library also subscribes to a few printed journals and popular magazines like “Economic and Political Weekly”, “Down to Earth”, etc.

To supplement the needs of teaching and learning community of the college, the library has started subscription of two daily newspapers, career related weekly- Employment News and Karmakshetra and Desh, a popular Bengali fortnightly publication for light reading.

The library has a working committee and every year it selects and awards one student as the best user and reader in order to encourage reading habits and optimum usage of library resources.

Our library is partially automated. Cataloguing and circulation system is automated. We have recently installed Koha library software to set up an automated library system. Koha is an open-source integrated library management system software, with a MySQL based relational SQL database backend. Koha’s front end is accessible from any modern up-to-date browser (preferably Mozilla Firefox / Google Chrome). Once completed, this initiative would serve as the backbone of the smart Library. All the computers of the library are connected through LAN.

In consonance with this activity, an extension of computer access facility has been initiated with initial deployment of three personal computers for students as well as teachers. More would be added in the coming days.

The ultimate goal of this Web-based Online Public Access Catalogue (WEBOPAC) is to enable patrons to browse library collection online beyond the physical boundary of the college.Wi-Fi infrastructure has already been in place recently.

The library also aims at increasing the electronic footprint by subscribing to N-List, the UGC initiative of electronic and online journal consortium exclusively meant for colleges.

Over the past years the college has developed an extremely well equipped laboratory base for imparting experimental and practical knowledge in Science faculty. The departments of Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Zoology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Geography are not only equipped with modern instruments and facilities but they are regularly updated for conducting the practical classes. The Geography department also provides an extremely updated GIS laboratory. The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), West Bengal has sanctioned a prestigious grant under Biotechnology based Opportunity Offered to Science & Technology Department (BOOST) to the departments of Microbiology and Molecular Biology to enhance facilities of undergraduate teaching in the said subjects, and allied subjects if any in the college. The departments of Mathematics, Geography, Computer Science and Physics have dedicated computer laboratories as a part of their curriculum. The Commerce department has also set up a well equipped laboratory for IT according to the needs of their changed syllabus. Apart from these departments which have dedicated computer facilities for the students, all other departments of Science and Humanities Faculty are provided with computers. The students and teachers have access to these terminals for gathering information and upgradation. There is also Internet facility available to the students, teachers and research scholars. In addition the students are provided with Internet access in the library from the UGC NET Resource Centre. The college administrative unit is also equipped with computers and they are also provided with internet access. Besides, the departments, Principal’s office, Library , administrative units of the college are well connected through an Intercom system.

A multi-gym under the financial assistance programme of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India has been set up for the benefit of students. There is a Gym Instructor to guide them. Popular outdoor sports like cricket, football, volleyball, etc., are encouraged along with indoor games like carom and chess. Annual sports meet is held every year and other tournaments are also organised.

The college has taken a major steps towards technology upgradation by installation of WiFi System in the college campus for the both student and staff with the collaboration of Reliance Jio Communication.

NSS-sammilani-mahavidyalayaThe NSS unit of the college was established on 31st July 2003 with the motto “Not me But You” to sensitize the young students with a myriad of activities. The unit makes an earnest endeavour to establish a meaningful linkage between the campus and the community. The activity of the NSS unit of the institution is broadly classified into two categories namely On campus and Off campus activity. The programmes are organised and conducted in the college premises and at Sahid Sriti Colony respectively. On campus activities like Blood donation camps, observation of National Science day, Orientation programme and Cleaning of college premises are some of the endeavours under NSS. Off campus programmes Special Camping programme in Sahid Smriti Colony slum area is carried out to spread awareness on public health, sanitation and personal hygiene. The ever enthusiastic NSS volunteers also participate in different activities conducted by the University of Calcutta.

Some Corporate houses including IT companies namely WIPRO and some Real Estate Groups are approaching the college to recruit candidates. The Placement Cell acts as a liaising body between these companies and the students desiring recruitment.

Free studentship is awarded to the economically backward students as per Government rule. Stipends and scholarships are provided to the meritorious students. On the foundation day.the college provides rewards and prizes from the college endowment fund to the students who have excelled in curricular as well as co-curricular activities. Besides that in the last academic session about 20 students of the college received scholarships on”Merit-cum-means” basis from the fund sanctioned by the UGC for the said purpose under Xlth Plan. As per the order of Chief Minister of West Bengal, Kanya-shree Prokalpa Programme was launched in 2014. Many girl students from our college promptly responded and were benefited

It is the utmost responsibility of the institution to generate awareness among students on health care, Peerless Hospital run by Peerless Hospitex Hospital and Research Center Ltd., located in the vicinity, supports the college actively in providing health care facilities to the students. A tie-up with the Peerless Hospital provides medical benefits to the students and staff at a nominal charge.

On the basis of questionnaire filled by the freshers, necessary guidance is provided to the students by concerned experts. A separate notice board displaying inputs for career guidance is provided for the benefit of students. The college has a UGC sponsored Career Counseling Cell which organises career fair each year for 3rd year outgoing students when companies come to recruit graduating students. Also workshop / seminars are organised for the students to impart the skills necessary for the job market.

Anti-ragging, Prevention of Sexual Harrassment and Grievance Redressal Cell

There is a Grievance Redressal Cell in the College which addresses the grievances put forward by students. For this purpose ‘Complaint Boxes’ have been put up at different points in the college.
It is an apolitical organisation maintaining a liaison between the present and the past and involved in multidimensional activities.
